Design Context: Universal Design (digital classroom resource)
Designed for use in schools
This is a digital download resource.
ABOUT
This is a FREE resource. If you wish to make a donation for any free resources you download just add the 'buy us a coffee' option to your basket (or add a paid for product as then you get an extra resource to use in your classroom).
This resource is part of a series of resources focused on design contexts. Other resources in the series look at specific contexts e.g. health and wellbeing but the theme for this resource is more generic relating to identifying design problems, users and needs, design thinking and universal design.
Slides are designed to help students develop research skills and to use what they have found out to inspire their own designing and making. Each slide groups together different examples linked to the theme content. Slides have a ‘big question’ down the side of the handout to provide a more specific focus for each slide. The slide includes video links, information on the videos, a weblink for further research and a question linked to each focus area. There are also a set of additional questions based on the big question, some of which are more challenging.
The videos are also available via our YouTube playlist.
The resource is flexible in how it might be used. Slide handouts can be used with students although they rely on access to the internet and video content so they may be less suitable for homework activities some students may not have access to this. The resource may be more suitable for older students due to the amount of reading and the level of challenge of some of the questions. Teachers might also use the slides as a starting point for their own research and planning.
The questions provide thinking points to encourage students to interact with the research rather than passively just looking at webpages and watching videos. Students are encouraged to extend their knowledge around the theme by doing their own research. The logo ‘how does this research inspire you’ also encourages students to consider how their research might inspire their own work.
A resource titled ‘Product Analysis: Universal Design Principles’ is available and might be used alongside this resource. It includes images of products that have been designed with universal design in mind and includes a structured writing frame (this is a paid for resource).
