Developing Textiles Skills: Seam Samples (Digital resource & 24 samples)

Designed for use in schools

This resource consists of a digital download on different types of seams as well as a pack of 24 seam samples. The digital download can also be purchased on its own here.

ABOUT

The digital download supports the development of different skills used to construct textile products.

  • The resource focuses on 6 seams commonly used for joining textile materials (open seam, closed seam, piped seam, French seam, run & fell seam, mock run & fell seam) . Each seam has a set of instructions and a short video tutorial. Two other less commonly used seams are also mentioned without video tutorials (edge to edge seam, lapped seam)
  • The resource includes several handouts that can be used in schools or other educational settings alongside any practical activities where seams are created.
  • The resource is not intended for any particular age group. The instructions can be used as they are or adapted to suit who the resource is being used with.

This version of the resource also includes a set of 24 seam samples mounted onto manilla tags (posted free of charge). The samples include:

  • Open seam - 1 sample showing what the right side of the seam looks like and 6 samples showing different ways of neatening the seam edges (pinking shears, overlocker machine, sewing machine overlocker stitch, zigzag stitch, turned edges, binding)
  • Closed seam - 1 sample showing what the right side of the seam looks like, 5 samples showing different ways of neatening the edge (overlocker machine, sewing machine overlocker stitch, zigzag stitch, using just an overlocker machine and using just a sewing machine overlocker stitch) and 1 sample showing a piped seam (where decorative piping has been added to a closed seam)
  • French seam - 1 sample showing what the right side of the seam looks like and 1 sample showing the wrong side of the seam
  • Run & fell seam - 1 sample showing what the right side of the seam looks like and 1 sample showing the wrong side of the seam
  • Mock run & fell seam 1 sample showing what the right side of the seam looks like, 1 sample showing the wrong side of the seam neatened with an overlocker machine and 1 sample showing the wrong side of the seam neatened with a zigzag stitch
  • Edge to edge seam - 1 sample showing how non-textiles materials can be joined using a sewing machine (this seam can also be used on textiles materials particularly thick materials that don't fray)
  • Lapped seam - 1 sample showing another way of joining non-textiles materials can be joined using a sewing machine (this seam can also be used on textiles materials particularly thick materials that don't fray)
  • 1 sample comparing a seam to a hem as these terms are often mixed up

Samples are displayed on manilla tags (approximately 6cm x 12cm) and each sample has a label identifying the seam.

The samples can be used for display or as a handling pack to help evaluate and compare seams.

Colours of materials and shapes may be slightly different to those shown in the images.
